Who uses public access ICTs? With the release of the first survey working paper, Public access to ICTs: Sculpting the profile of users, the Global Impact Study offers insight into who the users of public access ICTs are. Written by George Sciadas, with input from Hil Lyons, Chris Rothschild, and Araba Sey, this working paper results from data analysis of the user surveys in Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Ghana, and the Philippines.

Mobile internet researcher participates in social media conference

Co-PI of the Mobile internet in-depth study, Jonathan Donner, participated in the "Social Media for Development" workshop in Hangzhou, China in March 2011. He presented a position paper based on some of the hypotheses of the Mobile internet study at a pre-conference event of the Annual CSCW (Computer Supported Collaborative Work) conference.

Cost benefit analysis of public access venues in Chile

Given the proliferation of public access venues, such as cybercafes, telecentres, and public libraries, in developing countries, it is important to understand what value and perceived costs users associate with using and having access to these venues. By employing benefit cost analysis (BCA) methodologies, this in-depth study will explore the costs and benefits of providing and using public access information and communication technologies (ICT).

Field visit to South Africa

Global Impact Study research lead, Araba Sey, just spent one week in South Africa, to meet with the research team on the Mobile Internet in-depth study. During this visit, Araba had a chance to learn more about the public access to ICT landscape in South Africa, participate in research team meetings, and visit public access venues in both urban and non-urban areas of South Africa. Public access venues visited include cybercafes, public libraries, and schools.

Collaborative Knowledge Sharing study presents at Singapore conference

This past summer, Mike Best, the Principal Investigator of the Collaborative Knowledge Sharing in-depth study, presented a paper at the 19th annual Asia Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) conference in Singapore. The paper, written on preliminary findings from Mike's in-depth study, Connecting in Real Space: How People Share Knowledge and Technologies in Cybercafés, was very well-received and prompted vigorous discussion with conference attendees, earning "best paper of the session" accolades.
