Inventory database source code and documentation released

As a part of the Global Impact Study's commitment to open research, we have released the source code for the inventory database for other developers to use and adapt. The web application is written in PHP, using the Symfony framework, with a MySQL database back-end. Accompanying the source code is basic documentation describing the various components of the system. The extent of documentation is intended for individuals with experience deploying these types of environments. Please note that development of the Global Impact Study inventory database has ended. Although most bugs have been addressed, there is the possibility that some remain. As such, please treat the code as beta. This is open-source software licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v. 3.

Updated version of inventory web database available

The Global Impact Study has recently updated the public access venue inventory web database. Access to the inventory database is easy and free - just sign up and sign in below to explore the different types of venues, number of venues, location of venues, and much more in six countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Ghana, Lithuania, and the Philippines.

Global Impact Study open-source inventory web application poster presentation

Global Impact Study developer Alex Tulinsky presented a poster, "Vizmo: Open-Source Tools for Geospatial Data in Web Applications," at University of Washington's GIS Day (Geographic Information Systems) on November 16, 2011. The poster he presented provides an overview of software components used in the upcoming 2.0 version release of the Global Impact Study inventory database web application.

Research team uses Global Impact Study inventory tools in Mozambique

A research project focusing on community multimedia centres in Mozambique, RE-ACT, has adopted the Global Impact Study's inventory data collection tools to build a list of public access ICT venues in the country. The project is led by Isabella Rega, who spent some time with TASCHA in September 2010 as a visiting scholar. Araba Sey recently visited some of the project's researchers in Mozambique while doing field visits in Africa.

Training and orientation in Ghana

Global Impact Study research lead, Araba Sey, just spent one week in Ghana for a training exercise with STEPRI, the implementation team for our inventory and survey activities in Ghana. In addition to learning about the overall project structure and research design, participants discussed the inventory data collection process, and practiced administering the survey instruments.
