Mobile internet researcher participates in social media conference

Co-PI of the Mobile internet in-depth study, Jonathan Donner, participated in the "Social Media for Development" workshop in Hangzhou, China in March 2011. He presented a position paper based on some of the hypotheses of the Mobile internet study at a pre-conference event of the Annual CSCW (Computer Supported Collaborative Work) conference.

Field visit to South Africa

Global Impact Study research lead, Araba Sey, just spent one week in South Africa, to meet with the research team on the Mobile Internet in-depth study. During this visit, Araba had a chance to learn more about the public access to ICT landscape in South Africa, participate in research team meetings, and visit public access venues in both urban and non-urban areas of South Africa. Public access venues visited include cybercafes, public libraries, and schools.

What does the dramatic increase in mobile use — and particularly mobile internet use — mean for public access venues? Will mobile internet compete with, complement, or coexist with public access? A new in-depth study, Public Access, Private Phone, will explore the interplay between mobile internet and public access venues.
